A headline reports the figure. The note says what it will carry.

Every note here is written by somebody who read the source rather than a summary of it. Where two reports count the same year differently, both numbers go in and the note says which one you are quoting.

A container terminal at night, seen from above: stacks of yellow and red containers under floodlights, straddle carriers between them, and a road and a rail line running along the edge of the yard.

What the desk read, and what it is worth.

Six things worth knowing this term, each with the figure people will quote and what that figure actually supports. The photographs are frames of the film on the homepage, printed in its order, rather than pictures of these stories.

  • A covered market: baskets of tomatoes on wooden stands under umbrellas, a woman walking between the stalls.
    Cote d'Ivoire, a market.

    Regulation

    Rwf100m → 500m

Rwanda suspends new lender licences and raises capital fivefold

No new applications for six months, while incumbents get three years to meet the new floor. That asymmetry makes this consolidation policy in prudential clothing.

  • A road junction seen from directly above: yellow minibuses queued nose to tail along a curve, cars and lorries filling the lanes beside them, low roofs and stalls packed along both sides.
    Lagos, a junction from above.

    Payments

    −9.2% volume

Nigerian payment volume fell while value rose

Fewer, larger payments. If you earn per transaction that is a revenue warning the value headline hides completely. If you earn basis points it is fine.

    Vanguard, via allAfrica · NIBSS Q1 2026

  • A wide paved plaza with people walking across it, and beyond a low barrier a road lined with parked cars and blue taxis.
Rabat, a plaza and its taxis.

    Commerce

    GMV +20%

Jumia’s basket is shrinking and its take rate is compressing

But orders rose 28% and revenue only 14%: more, smaller baskets and a thinner cut. This is also the only audited transaction data for pan-African e-commerce.

  • A busy shopping street: people walking past shopfronts under a yellow awning, one carrying a load on her head, mid-rise buildings and a tree behind them.
    Addis Ababa, the open-air market.

    Data

    4.72 months

Six countries share one reserve figure, and it has not happened yet

Import cover projected for 31 December 2026, in the conditional: the reserves permettraient de couvrir. The BEAC’s own latest measurement is 4.03 months at 31 March 2026, below the 4.12 it records for end-2025. One central bank holds the reserves of six countries, so this is the only such figure any of them has.

  • Stacks of yellow and red shipping containers lit by floodlights at night, a straddle carrier standing over a lane beside them, and an empty road running past.
    Cape Town, the container stacks.

    Payments

    9.7m → 19.7m

Morocco’s mobile wallet transactions doubled in 2024, and the central bank says why

Bank Al-Maghrib credits the doubling mostly to direct social aid landing in payment accounts rather than to people paying each other. Wallets issued reached 13.7 million over the same year, and issued counts distribution, not use.

Sources

Where this comes from.

Twenty feeds and four read by hand. Twelve of the feeds were added in two passes. The first six got the wire off the Lagos and Nairobi axis. The next six were because four of the six regions had come down to a single publisher each, and a region read through one newsroom is a region you are reading about rather than from.

Read automatically

  • West

TechCabal The daily record of African tech, and the closest thing the continent has to a paper of record for startups.

  • West

Techpoint Africa Nigeria-weighted, and strong on the operational detail other outlets skip.

  • West

Condia Formerly Benjamindada. Good on the business model underneath the announcement.

  • Pan-African

Launch Base Africa Follows the deals and the legal structures around them. Useful when a round is more complicated than the headline.

  • Pan-African

WeeTracker Data-led coverage of African venture activity.

  • Southern

Ventureburn Southern African startups, which the Lagos and Nairobi axis tends to crowd out.

  • Pan-African

Rest of World Reports technology outside the West on its own terms. Filtered here to African coverage.

  • Pan-African

The Big Deal Maxime Bayen counts African startup funding properly, and shows his working.

  • East

Shega Ethiopia, which almost nobody else covers as a market rather than as a headline. Payments, licensing and the reforms underneath them.

  • North

Enterprise The Egyptian business morning briefing. Reads the regulators directly, which is rare anywhere.

  • Southern

Zitamar News Mozambique, in English, reported by people who live there. Lusophone Africa is otherwise a hole in every English wire.

  • West in French

Financial Afrik Dakar-based, and the best single view of the franc zone, where one central bank sets the rules for eight countries at once.

  • Central in French

Digital Business Africa Cameroon-based, and one of the few places Central African telecom and payments regulation is reported at all.

  • Pan-African

Semafor Africa A continent desk inside a general publication. Filtered here to its African coverage.

  • North

The North Africa Post Rabat-based and in English, read for the Maghreb as a whole: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya in one place.

  • North in French

Algérie Eco Algiers-based. Follows the ministries, the import rules and the oil quota in a market that rarely reaches an English wire.

  • East

Capital FM Business The business desk of a Nairobi newsroom. Strong on the port, the tax rules and the bank rules that decide what a Kenyan business pays.

  • East

TanzaniaInvest Tanzania through its own numbers: the Dar es Salaam exchange, sector output and the licence rounds.

  • Southern

Techzim Harare-based, on Zimbabwean payments, mobile data and the operators behind them, written for the people who use them.

  • Southern

Sunday Standard The business section of a Gaborone weekly. Botswana sets its own bank rate and issues its own bonds, and this is where that is reported.

Read by hand

  • No feed

Partech Africa Tech VC Report The annual funding benchmark. Published as a report rather than a stream, so we read it when it lands and write it up ourselves.

  • No feed

Briter Bridges Sector maps and funding data, with unusually clear methodology notes.

  • No feed

GSMA State of the Industry The primary source for mobile money volumes, and the figure most often misquoted back at us.

  • No feed

Le Desk and Hespress Morocco, in French. Read by hand rather than pulled in, because the wire on this page is English and a machine-translated headline is not a source.

3 of the feeds did not answer when this page was last built: Techpoint Africa, Condia, Sunday Standard. They are listed rather than quietly dropped.

One question

A headline will not tell you whether to enter Ghana.

If the number you need is not in anyone's report, that is the kind of question this desk takes.
